The installation guide

Drill-in or no-drill? Start with your window.

The right installation begins with the frame, the available space and the shade you choose. Compare the two approaches, then check what your window needs.

Roman shades framing a warm, thoughtfully furnished living room

Two approaches. Different fitting needs.

The main difference is how the shade is fixed. Neither approach changes your choice of fabric or light control by itself; the available combinations depend on the product.

What to compare Drill-in No-drill
How it is fixed Brackets are secured with screws and fixings suited to the mounting surface. A compatible system secures the shade without drilling its mounting points. The exact mechanism depends on the product.
Where it sits Inside the recess or outside the opening, where the product and fixing surface allow. Only in the position approved for that system. A recess-fit system is not an outside-mount solution.
What to check A sound fixing base, the correct fasteners, bracket clearance and room for the shade to move. Frame profile and condition, contact surfaces, usable depth, clearances and the permitted shade size and weight.
After removal Fixing holes normally remain and may need filling or refinishing. There are no drilled mounting holes, but marks or pressure effects can depend on the system and finish. Do not assume damage-free removal.
A reason to consider it You want a bracket-mounted fit or need an approved outside-mount arrangement. You want to avoid drilling and your window has been confirmed compatible with the selected system.

Could your window suit no-drill?

Use these checks to start the conversation. They describe recess-fit considerations, not a guarantee that every no-drill product will fit.

A useful starting point

A rectangular recess with flat, parallel sides, a firm and sound surface, enough clear depth and no obstructions in the shade’s path. Share measurements and photos so we can check the specific system.

Check the moving parts

Inward-opening or tilt-and-turn windows, sash or sliding windows, bay windows, prominent handles, locks, screens and stepped trim need closer review. Show how the window opens as well as how it looks when closed.

Consider another approach

No recess, curved or tapered sides, insufficient contact area, loose trim or a fragile finish may rule out a recess-held system. A different approved system or a suitable drill-in installation may be needed.

Wood, vinyl/uPVC or aluminium alone does not establish compatibility. The frame’s shape, condition and the exact mounting system matter too.

D marks available recess depth. Concept diagram only, not to scale. Minimum depth and supported dimensions must come from the selected product’s requirements.

Depth is usable space.

Check the clear space from the intended front mounting position to the nearest obstruction. A handle, lock, screen or opening sash can reduce that space. The headrail, fabric folds and moving window all need room.

Four details help us check the fit.

Gather these before choosing a no-drill shade. For this US guide, record measurements in inches and keep every original reading.

  1. The whole window

Take a straight-on photo showing the full opening, surrounding trim and sill. Tell us the frame material if known.

  2. The frame and movement

Photograph both sides of the recess, the top, handles and locks. Add a photo with the window open so we can see its movement and any screens.

  3. Three widths. Three heights.

Record width at the top, middle and bottom, and height at the left, centre and right. Keep all six readings. Do not deduct allowances or choose a final order size until the product’s measuring rules are confirmed.

  4. Clear depth and your shade

Record the available depth and any obstructions. Include the Roman shade style, fabric and control option you are considering so the complete system can be checked.

A few questions, answered.

Does every Roman shade support no-drill?

No. The headrail, mounting system, shade dimensions and weight must work together. Confirm no-drill compatibility for the exact product before ordering.

How deep does my window need to be?

There is no single depth that fits every system. Measure the clear depth and share photos of handles, screens and the opening window. We will help check it against the selected product’s requirements.

Is no-drill always suitable for a rental?

It can be worth considering, but avoiding screw holes does not guarantee that every finish will remain unmarked. Confirm the system, frame condition and any permission you need before installation.

Can I use no-drill outside the window recess?

A system designed to hold between the sides of a recess cannot be used as an outside mount. Ask about an approved alternative for your window rather than adapting the mounting hardware.
